Listen to the Birds - Every day is Earth Day!
I lead a busy life, as do most people these days and I was
happy to see the increased attention on the environment this
Earth Day - however nature reminds us each and everyday
there is much to celebrate. From the birds chirping in the
morning to the buzzing insects as they awaken to the warmth
of spring.
Recently, I had the good fortune of traveling to one of the
"outermost" spots in the country - the Dry Tortugas National
Park where nature has redeemed what man has abandoned -
at one time Fort Jefferson - a coastal fort and infamous prison
- now the birds have reclaimed it as their own. More than 300
birds stop over in their migratory route each year - on nearby
islands a sort of hotel for birds - with nesting colonies of sooty
terns, masked boobies, and frigate birds. From February to
August you can't miss the sound of the birds.
